The Cachers Behind the GeoTour

• Trycacheus – Chad “Trycacheus” Thorvillson has been geocaching since 2008 and has been making geocaching unnecessarily difficult ever since. He lives in Gilby with his wife Jane, TheOtherHalf, who patiently puts up with all our geocaching antics.


• RetiredGuy – Inventor of Ms. Pac-Man and a geocacher since 2009, RetiredGuy resides in Boston with his wife, RetiredGirl. He has found the oldest cache in all 50 states, Washington DC, and in 84 countries of the 148 countries he has cached in. Check out his fun stats at RetiredGuy.com.


• Gia "Giacaches" – First visited Gilby in 2017 and has been hyping it ever since. Proud founder of the Gilby Fan Club - A Geocaching Group. Originally from Minnesota, Gia now resides in Seattle, Washington.


• GeocachingVlogger – Since 2011, "The Geocaching Vlogger" has been creating geocaching videos on Youtube, Tiktok and on other social media outlets. Gilby, North Dakota

Gilby is a small town with a population of 239, located about 30 minutes northwest of Grand Forks, North Dakota. When visiting, please show respect for this wonderful tight-knit community.

The closest airport to Gilby is GFK (Grand Forks, ND) in which there are many hotels and restaurants. FAR (Fargo, ND), BIS (Bismarck, ND), and MSP (Minneapolis, MN) are other U.S. options. YWG (Winnipeg, MB) is a good Canadian option if you're looking to pick up another country or province.

Camping is also available at Turtle River State Park (Arvilla, ND) and Red River State Park (East Grand Forks, MN). Please note that there are no restaurants in Gilby so pack accordingly with snacks, beverages, and a full tank of gas.


Souvenirs
• The Gilby GeoTour souvenir is earned by completing all 29 caches of the GeoTour
• The North Dakota souvenir will be earned by finding your first cache in the GeoTour
• The Minnesota souvenir can be earnd by crossing the Red River in Grand Forks and finding a cache
• The Manitoba and Canada souvenirs can be earned by driving 80 minutes north of Grand Forks or 65 minutes from the Gilby exit on I29 and finding a cache
• The South Dakota souvenir can be earned by driving 2 hours south of Grand Forks and finding a cache


Gas, Food, and Water
There are no gas stations, convenience stores, or restaurants in Gilby. The closest gas station is the Manvel station, 14 miles away, at the exit on I29. Please make sure you have gas, snacks, and water before driving to Gilby.


Porta Potty
There is a porta potty on the south side of the park.


Cell Coverage
While cell coverage is usually decent in Gilby, please download the caches for offline use in advance of driving to Gilby.


Standing Water
During rainy periods, there might be standing water around some of the caches, especially near the road. It's advisable to wear sturdy mud boots during these times.


Roads
In Gilby, you may encounter roads marked as "Minimum Maintenance Road.”. Although your GPS may suggest these routes, it's best to avoid them, especially after rain. It's recommended to use 4WD or high clearance vehicles. Many caches have "Approaches'', perpendicular turn offs from the road leading to the fields. If possible, please use these for parking.
